Before you can even get in a car to drive on UK roads, you need to be 17 years old and have your provisional licence, if you do not have it you can apply for it at the DVLA. The next step is to book your driving lessons or you might have been given some as a gift. You need to be sure that you are using a qualified DVSA approved driving instructor (ADI) or a potential driving instructor (PDI, Trainee) you will be able to check on the first lesson, each ADI must display their ID certificate (green-ADI, pink-PDI) on the windscreen.

The first lesson will take place once the ADI has checked your provisional licence then your eyesight will be checked, you must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away, if you need glasses to read the number plate you must wear them when driving, further information can be found HERE
There are a lot of key skills to cover throughout your driving tuition and you will be learning new key skills every time you go out on the road so it is advised that where possible you back-up all the skills you are learning with private tuition.
Private tuition can take place with a relative or friend as long as they have held their Full UK licence for 3 years and are over the age of 21. You must be insured to drive the vehicle and must at all times have "L" plates visible at the front and rear of the vehicle. You must also only practice the key skills you have learned so as not to put yourself and your passenger at risk, also so that you don't develop any bad habits which could hinder your learning.
